Direct Vision Standard (DVS)

The Direct Vision Standard is a zero to five star rating system that measures the driver's direct visibility from the cab of any heavy goods vehicle (HGV). This will indicate the level of risk to vulnerable road users (VRUs) near to the vehicle.

Below shows the direct visibility that a driver of an 'off-road' or 'construction specification' N3G category vehicle has.

Direct Vision Standard - Star Rating

Vehicle manufacturers now assign a DVS rating to vehicles as they come out of the factory. A record of star ratings will be kept by the vehicle manufacturer and passed on to TfL.

Every vehicle must meet a minimum of one star rating* to be able to apply for a permit. If your vehicle does not meet the DVS star rating or is not rated, you will need to meet the ‘Safe System’ requirements to be granted a permit.

If your vehicle star rating is not recorded on the TfL site, you will need to submit information from the manufacturer before they can grant you a permit.

Contact your manufacturer, provide the chassis number (VIN) and the manufacturer will then calculate the star rating of your vehicle based on the approved DVS technical protocol and send you a document or email confirming your vehicle's DVS star rating.

Any DVS rating advised will reflect the specification of the vehicle at first stage manufacture; multi-stage manufacture and later modifications are not reflected in the DVS rating. Your manufacturer will be able to advise.

To submit a star rating from your manufacturer, you can upload the confirmation they've sent you through the TfL Make an enquiry form. They will then update their records so you can apply for a permit.
