Guide To: ECE R7 - Position, Tail, Stop and Clearance Lamps

05 July 2018

UN ECE R7, or Regulation No. 7 of the Economic Commission for Europe of the United Nations, is a regulation that specifies the requirements for front and rear position lamps, stop-lamps and end-outline marker lamps for power-driven vehicles (except motor cycles) and their trailers. These devices are used to indicate the presence and the width of the vehicle when viewed from the front and rear.

UN ECE R7 applies to position lamps, stop-lamps and end-outline marker lamps that are either stand-alone or built into other light units, such as combination or multi-function lights. The regulation specifies the size, shape, color, and photometric performance of these devices. It also specifies the test methods that must be used to verify that they meet the requirements of the regulation.

UN ECE R7 is recognized by many countries around the world. This means that position lamps, stop-lamps and end-outline marker lamps that have been approved under UN ECE R7 can be used on vehicles in these countries.

Here are some of the key requirements of UN ECE R7:

Position lamps must be white or amber in color. Stop-lamps must be red in color. End-outline marker lamps must be red or amber in color. Position lamps, stop-lamps and end-outline marker lamps must have a minimum size and photometric performance. Position lamps, stop-lamps and end-outline marker lamps must pass a series of tests to verify that they meet the requirements of the regulation. UN ECE R7 is an important regulation that helps to improve the safety of vehicles on the road. By requiring position lamps, stop-lamps and end-outline marker lamps to meet certain standards, the regulation helps to ensure that these devices are effective in indicating the presence and the width of the vehicle when viewed from the front and rear.
